But first, read which photo features to look out for if you want to buy a good quality camera phone.

Best Camera Phones 2022 (OVERVIEW) - CONTENTS

How to Choose a Camera Phone

The offer on the market of camera phones is constantly expanding and we can tell that nowadays the category of phone cameras is very important. When introducing new mobile phones, all manufacturers emphasise the quality of the photo lenses and compete in offering more lenses, higher resolution or better zoom. But what should we really look out for as users? Which parameters should we follow to keep track of the camera phones market?

The most discussed parameter is still the sensor resolution. It would be a mistake to only decide by the sensor, but the good resolution can, for example, serve to improve image quality after zooming. The standard resolution rises with time, even sensors with 48 or 64 Mpx are no surprise today. The record holder in the first quarter of 2020 is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G with a 108Mpx sensor when this value is used to combine several pixels into one.

In addition to the resolution, we should also check the lens aperture. The aperture ratio indicates how much light the sensor can use to take a photo. The lower the aperture, the more light gets to the sensor. In that case, we can get better results even in low light conditions. Also, such sensor is capable of capturing images faster, reducing the risk of blur caused by a moving object.

For a proper camera setup or a scene control in real-time, nowadays manufacturers rely on artificial intelligence or AI. The phones are equipped with powerful processors that can improve focus, recognise objects and faces etc. using smart algorithms. Evaluation of these settings is processed instantly, much faster than a human mind could respond.

Artificial intelligence can also control images from multiple sensors. Gone are the days when a mobile phone had just one quality sensor. Today phones are equipped with several sensors, each takes care of a different area, each is designed for a different type of imaging. Phones with four, five, or even seven sensors are no exception. The main lens is complemented by an ultra-wide, telephoto, macro sensor, ToF sensor and other types of sensors.

Mobile phones used to be criticised for not being able to work well with zoom compared to digital cameras. The concept of optical zoom, however, has become a standard to mobile phones and manufacturers combine it with digital and hybrid zoom. It is possible to optically zoom a scene to a certain extent without loss of image quality. If zoomed closer with digital zoom, the image quality will decrease.

Also, you might have heard of the term "wide-angle lens", which ensures that the shooting area is enlarged and the lens allows to fit more of the scene in the photo or video. That is for example how popular GoPro action cameras work. Some phones also have this ultra-wide-angle lens, which can capture a really large field of view.

iPhone 13 Pro Max

iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • Enhanced night mode
  • Filmmaker Mode
  • Macro

The most expensive new iPhone model is really ready for great photography. Although the paper parameters of the sensors differ only slightly, the number of megapixels does not differ at all, but there have been valuable changes. In particular, all cameras can now handle night mode. When really close focusing, the macro mode is automatically activated for close-up shots of the subject. The sensors have grown in size and can also handle enhanced video recording. According to the manufacturer, the footage will look like it was cut from a movie thanks to the filmmaking mode. Expect a display with up to 120Hz dynamic frequency when editing photos, videos and even when using iOS 15. And the larger battery and lower price are certainly nice enticements that will convince many users to buy the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The pleasing news is that this year the Pro and Pro Max models are no different except for size. So with iPhone 13 Pro, expect performance on par with its bigger brother, and not just in terms of photography and cinematography. The fast A15 Bionic chip won't keep you waiting, and the agile iOS 15 and faster-response display only help the smoothness. This year, the polished-edge design comes in 4 possible colour variants. These are dark grey, gold, silver and the new mountain blue. And to enjoy the display on an even larger surface, the front cutout containing the Face ID camera and other sensors has been narrowed. The increase in battery life over last year's iPhone 12 Pro is really noticeable.

Both have a resolution of 10 Mpx but differ in the optical zoom range. The former can handle 3x magnification, the latter 10x. You can edit and work with raw RAW images on the phone itself. A new feature of the smartphone is the S Pen integrated into the body with an even faster response, which can be used to control the huge 6.8" display. The S22 Ultra has the best hardware components and has a lot to offer. Not only the most demanding users are likely to be very satisfied with it.

iPhone 13

  • Powerful Apple A15 Bionic chip
  • Filmmaker Mode
  • New camera layout

The entry-level iPhone 13 will please those who want a quality photo phone but still want it to be compact and powerful. The medium-sized 6.1-inch display should be enough for most users, but the response is the standard 60Hz. There are more colour options to choose from, so you can get it in green or pink, for example. The performance parameters are clearly defined - Apple's A15 Bionic processor is almost unrivalled and the reliable system ensures a truly seamless iOS experience. Apple has relied on 12MP cameras for years, and in addition to the basic one, there's also a wide-angle one. There's no shortage of movie mode, and in general, the capabilities are more in line with the Pro series models. Macro, however, remains the prerogative of the Pro models.
