Sony Corporation is a Japanese company founded in 1946. Its headquarters are in Tokyo. Though it started inconspicuously, selling transistor radios, they became one of the leading innovators in the postwar period, developing the CD and DVD, as well as the highly successful PlayStation line.
Though it occasionally struggled during periods of financial crisis and recession, the company always persisted, and today is one of the most prestigious brands worldwide, known for their innovative products in electronics, video games, and the entertainment industry.
Sony was founded in Tokyo in 1946 by an electrical engineer, Masaru Ibuka, and a physicist, Akio Morita, who invested 190,000 yen towards its foundation. The company had only about twenty employees and was named Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation).
The famous Sony name was later created by combining the words Sonus (Latin Sonic), meaning sound, and Sonny, which was a slang term for young man in the 1950s.
At first, Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation focused on the repair of electronic equipment and machinery, as well as producing some of its own products. The first such product was an automatic rice cooker, which proved very popular in Japan. But a turning point came in 1954. The first radio transmitter was produced in America, which at the time was not yet used in radio equipment. Sony took this technology and used it in their products, and the following year they launched the first Japanese transistor radio.
And today? Sony is world-renowned for its high quality electronics. The company has been known as a technological pioneer since its foundation, with many significant innovations to their name, such as the compact disc, walkman and discman. Sony has had a major influence on the world of entertainment and consumer electronics, but this is not the only area where Sony excel.
Sony Group contains a number of operating components that manufacture a wide range of electronics, including Playstation consoles, computer games, and mobile phones, as well as film and music production. Sony also provides financial services.
