The processor is the proverbial brain of your PC. Choosing the right processor enables you to speed up demanding applications and programs, use the full potential of your graphics card, and even reduce power consumption. Keep in mind that the processor socket must match the socket on your motherboard.

What processor should you choose?

If you are building a PC, make sure that the components are actually balanced and there are no bottlenecks. Also consider the primary purpose of your new PC. If you want a gaming PC, the key component is the graphics card; the processor and RAM can be mid-range (16 GB RAM + Core i5-7600K), but your graphics card should be high-end. If you want virtual reality, 3D graphics processing or video editing, you should invest in a faster processor and more RAM.

  • Multimedia - Word, Excel, Internet, Skype, photos, watching movies, playing older and less demanding games.
  • Full HD gaming - gaming in Full HD or QHD. If you invest in Radeon RX470, you will get higher performance in the latest games that use API Vulkan or DirectX 12.
  • Games and 3D graphics - Full HD and QHD gaming for the next couple of years, as well as amateur 3D graphics and video editing. If you are not a fan of overclocking and have a tight budget, you can buy a Core i5-7500 or i5-7400.
  • High performance - playing modern games at very high FPS (frames per second), 4K gaming, VR (virtual reality), eSports, fast 3D graphics and video processing, also good for CAD/CAM/CFD work.

Clock speed and number of cores

Clock speed and number of cores are not comparable across different models, unless we are talking about processors with the same architecture (Intel Kaby Lake, AMD Zen, etc.). What matters is the performance of the processor as a whole and AMD and Intel processors can be very different in that regard.

  • Clock speed - CPU speed in GHz. If you are comparing processors with the same architecture, a higher clock speed with the same number of cores means better performance.
  • Number of cores - a processor with more cores can process more tasks (threads) simultaneously, which speeds up individual programs and the whole system.
  • Hyper-Threading - enables selected Intel processors to handle two times more threads than there are physical cores.

Overclocking (OC)

  • Automatic overclocking (Turbo Boost/Turbo Core) - dynamic overclocking that enables the processor to meet the requirements of applications that cannot use the full number of cores.
  • User overclocking - Intel Core processors marked as "K" and AMD Black Edition processors can be overclocked by setting the multiplier and selecting an appropriate wattage, or even automatically using the software included with the motherboard.
  • Motherboards - in the Intel camp, only motherboards with Z170, Z270 and X99 chipsets can be overclocked by the user. AMD chipsets don’t restrict user overclocking, though for the FX series processors it is recommended to choose a 790 or 990FX motherboard.

If you raise the wattage when overclocking, it also raises the TDP, which may be an issue for the cooler (stock).

Other processor parameters

  • TDP - maximum processor power consumption during operation in real conditions (gaming, 3D graphics processing, etc.). This is the key parameter manufacturers use when designing cooling systems.
  • Manufacturing technology (in nm) - the smaller, the more advanced and energy-efficient the processor is.
  • Integrated GPU (iGPU) - an integrated graphics card. With a powerful processor it can offer enough power for multimedia and undemanding gaming.
  • Reduced power consumption - Special Edition processors that operate at a lower wattage and consume less power.
  • Stock cooler - cooler included with the processor.

The term CPU processor (central processing unit) refers to a complex electronic integrated circuit, which is the brain of any computers. Settles into the socket on the motherboard and its selection should pay close attention. The processor is definitely not the part of the computer that should save. Now the processor is actually one of the main factors that affect the overall performance of your computer.

Slowly but surely recede classic single-core processors that are pushed modern multi-core bits. Currently used dual-core, three, quad-core and even six-core processors. Multi-core processor has compared to single core one big advantage. That is the ability to process larger amounts of information at once. So you can have several programs running at the same time, without a significant decline in computer performance. Manufacturers are also currently focus on that processors have as little energy demands. Therefore, processors are now manufactured advanced 45nm process, thus producing less heat dissipation performance and are more energy-efficient. Modern processors work with 64-bit and 32-bit applications.

Primarily processors are divided according to the manufacturer's (AMD and Intel). Both producers and processors developed for different socket (socket). It is therefore necessary to ensure that the selected processor is fully compatible with the motherboard, possibly the one that we are also planning to buy. The important parameters in the selection of the processor are working frequency, system bus frequency, cache size, support for modern instruction and ultimately consumption.
