Choosing the right printer from a wide range of products is not easy. While multifunctional inkjet printers feature a range of features and communication interfaces such as WiFi or Bluetooth, a thermal printer allows you to print high-quality photographs. Laser printers, on the other hand, are great because of their low operating costs when printing multiple text documents. When selecting a printer, make sure to consider what you are planning to use it for. Take a look at the description of the most important printer features and parameters that will make it easier for you to choose.

Printing technology

Printers are based on many different printing technologies. Before purchasing a printer, it is good to clarify the purpose you will actually use it for. Every technology stated below has its strengths and weaknesses that we will now make you familiar with.

Inkjet printers

Inkjet printers feature a high-quality black and white, as well as colour document and photograph printing. Due to its compact size and low purchase price, you can use an inkjet printer at home for occasional printing. Nowadays, a longer ink usage does not make it dry out, however, the printer consumes a portion of the ink to clean the printer head during the first time printing, which increases its consumption and therefore the printing costs. Nonentheless, inkjet printers are some of the most versatile and most widely used types of home printers.

  • Lower purchase price.
  • High-quality text and image printing.
  • Higher price of consumables.

Laser Printers

Laser printers are used especially for large-volume printing of documents at a minimum cost. Due to the worse quality of photograph printing, laser printers are primarily designed for offices and businesses that work with a large number of text documents.

  • High printing speed.
  • Minimum operating costs.
  • Poor image quality.

Thermal printers

Thermal printers use a high temperature of the print head and are especially suitable for printing photographs, self-adhesive labels and tags. The ink in these printers does not dry even after a long period of inactivity, and the printed photographs are highly resistant to any external influences.

  • High-quality graphics printing.
  • Photo resilience.
  • Higher purchase price and operating costs.
  • Poor text quality.

Dot matrix printers

Printing with dot matrix printers is similar to typewriter printing. They allow multiple copies to be printed at the same time, at minimal cost. Dot matrix printers are especially suitable for printing text documents and long lists. A disadvantage is the slow and poor photograph printing-quality.

  • High printing speed.
  • Minimal operating costs.
  • Not suitable for printing photographs.

Check out system printers

Check out system printers are designed for all merchants, who are looking for a simple solution for printing their receipts. Check out system printers are based on a dot matrix or a thermal printing technology. Many will also appreciate the small portable printers equipped with a battery.

  • The best printer type for printing receipts.
  • Very small dimensions.
  • Cordless printers also work in the field.
  • Single-purpose printers.

3D printers

3D printers are able to print a three-dimensional object based on a digital model. These printers are mainly used in the industries and health care, but due to their declining price, you can even print various items and accessories at home. There are several types of 3D printers:

  • 3D pens - the most affordable version, works on a melting material principle.
  • Complete 3D printers - Complete 3D devices that only need to be connected to a PC.
  • 3D printer kit - First, you need to assemle the printer. Designed for 3D printing enthusiasts.
  • Suitable for manufacturing components or toys.
  • Some models are also suitable for beginners.
  • Higher purchase price.

Important printer features and parameters

Paper size

An important feature of each printer is the maximum size of the printed documents and photos. When purchasing a new printer, it is important to consider the format that you wish to use. The most commonly used formats include:

Printer interface

For an operation and work ease, printers have a range of connectors and a wireless technology to connect to many devices. In addition to the usual USB interface, modern printers are also equipped with a LAN connectivity for an easy operation from multiple PCs on your network. While multifunction printers often dispose of WiFiBluetooth, or an NFC functionality for smartphone printing, corporate printers are mostly supported by cloud solutions.

The most common printer features

Printers have a number of additional features to help you print and work with documents.

  • A scanner allows you to digitally scan documents and photographs.
  • A fax can send documents using the fax interface.
  • Double-sided (duplex) printing prints both sides of the document without the need to manually turn the paper.
  • Borderless printing prints without a white border along the edges of the page.
  • A display makes a printer easy to control and informs you about the tasks being performed.
  • The automatic document feeder allows you to copy multi-page documents at once.
  • AirPrint is used for convenient wireless document printing from Apple devices.

An important part of every printer are the corresponding consumables. Each printing technology requires a suitable printing paper, along with an either black or colour toner, or ink cartridges.

Printers by definition are output devices that transmit data in electronic form to print on printable media such as paper, photographic paper and CD/DVD media. They work on different principles and are divided into different categories including dot matrix printers, inkjet printers, laser printers and thermal printers.

Dot matrix printers use the oldest, yet still popular printer technology. They print using a standard 8, 9 or 24 needles located in the printhead that runs over inking ribbons and prints through impact to compose printed text and images. An advantage of the dot matrix is that it can print several copies at a time (via a carbon copy). In addition, the print tape wears out gradually and therefore you know when it must be replaced. The paper used by dot matrix printers have side perforation, which provides very good paper leadership and accurate printing.

Inkjet printers are the most commonly used printers today and are especially popular in homes and small offices. They are powerful and have an interesting blend of cost and performance (including quality printing). The technology uses a microscopic nozzle which applies miniature droplets to paper formimg text and images. Multifunction inkjet printers also function as a copier, scanner and fax machine, and add further appeal to this technology. Overall these printers are a cost effective, common printing solution that appear in modern homes and share some qualities of more expensive office equipment.

Laser printers use a similar principle as copiers. The image or text is marked by a laser beam on the photosensitive (semiconducting) cylinder. It is then applied to the toner (powder), which is fastened only to locations previously illuminated by the laser, and transfers to paper. The entire process is completed by "fusing", ie thermal fixation. This method is accurate and produces high-quality printed materials. Laser printers are also available as multifunction devices that can handle printing, copying, scanning and faxing.

Thermal printers use a print head to produce images and text on special thermal paper as it passes over it. This technology does not use ink, toner and similar accessories which is the main advantage. Thermal printers are often used as a small compact printer for printing photographs or as POS printers.
