Hard Drives

0

Hard drives are data storage devices used for storing data even when powered off. They differ in their design, performance, purposed use and capacity. A hard drive is a crucial part of your computer or laptop. Choose a suitable model depending on what you’ll be using your computer for.

Continue

Do you need an internal hard drive, or an easily detachable external drive?

  • To speed up your computer - SSD drives, especially the fastest models using the NVMe interface and M.2 ports, provide a substantial performance boost. A good low-budget alternative to SSD drives are hybrid SSHD drives. These also make your computer run faster but offer a better price to storage ratio.
  • To back up data or expand your data storage capacity - Currently,  internal 3.5"HDDs are the most cost-effective option. To share files within a network or with multiple devices, opt for an external 3.5" HDD or a network data storage device (NAS). These offer a range of advanced features, e.g. automatic backups.
  • Transferring documents and media - With a 2.5" external drive, you will have access to all your data anytime, anywhere. Compared to 3.5" drives, these are more rugged and durable. This makes them great for travelling. If you prefer miniature dimensions over capacity, go for a flash drive.

What capacity do you need?

How hard drive capacity translates into real-world usage:

CapacityVideo (DVD)Music (mp3)Photos (JPG)
120 GB25 films24,000 songs30,000 images
500 GB106 films100,000 songs128,000 images
2000 GB425 films400,000 songs512,000 images

Hard drive types:

  • SSD - Compared to traditional drives, SSDs eliminate lag times and achieve much higher speeds. Because they are made without any moving parts, their power consumption and noise emission are very low. SSD drives, especially when used as system drives, provide a tremendous performance boost for your computer.
  • HDD - Because of their unrivalled price to storage ratio, HDDs are great for storing large amounts of data.
  • SSHD - These combine both a classic HDD and an SSD flash memory. That reduces the cost per gigabyte but also ensures fast data access and makes your computer boot up faster. SSHDs are a reasonable compromise, especially if you need more storage space and don't have two hard drive slots.

Interface / connector types:

  • Serial ATA (SATA) - SATA III hard drives (6Gb/s) are usually backwards compatible even with motherboards featuring SATA I/II (1,5/3 Gb/s) connectors. However, avoid plugging an SSD drive into a Serial ATA I port (1.5 Gb/s) as these are not entirely compatible. Moreover, the port's limited data throughput would cancel out the SSD's main advantage.
  • USB - Most commonly used to connect external drives. There is a massive difference in transmission speeds between individual generations - e.g. USB 3.0 (3.1 gen.1) is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
  • M.2 - Before you buy a hard drive that uses the M.2 interface, check if your motherboard supports the NVMe interface or Serial ATA (or both) and then choose accordingly.
  • WiFi - Wireless connectivity greatly facilitate data transfers between external drives to laptops, phones, tablets, and other portable devices.

The effect various interfaces have on data transfer rates:

InterfaceTime needed to transfer 1GB of data *
SATA II (3Gb/s)3.3 s
SATA III (6Gb/s)1.6 s
USB 2.016,6 s
USB 3.0 (3.1 gen1)1.6 s
USB 3.1 (3.1 Gen2)0.8 s
NVMe0.4 s
WiFi 802.11ac8 s

* Minimum duration is derived from the maximum transfer speed of the interface

Hard Drives

Hard Drives

Hard drives are used to permanently store data in computers, laptops and other devices. They are one of the most important parts of a computer and they differ in many features, therefore, when selecting the right hard drive, pay attention to its parameters.

How to choose the right hard drive?

The important parameters are hard drive capacity, type of interface, the technology used to write/read data, and in some cases, even the cooling system. Choose from our wide selection of internal hard drives or external hard drives. External hard drives are ideal for expanding the storage space of laptops or computers. They are ideal for storing large files that you don't have to use daily, e.g. films and videos.

SSDs

Solid State Drives use flash memory and have no moving mechanical components. Therefore, SSDs are incredibly quiet, fast, and less prone to mechanical damage. Because of their very low energy consumption, they are ideal for high-performance laptops or ultrabooks.

Server hard drives

Hard drives for data storage within a network (NAS) are designed for both home and corporate environments. A NAS can store data which you can access from anywhere using a simple web interface. Server hard drives also have to endure very demanding conditions. They are designed for continuous operation, during which their plates can rotate at 15,000 rpm.

WD drives

Western Digital produces powerful and efficient hard drives of the highest quality. Their hard drives have a reputation for being reliable and durable. Their colour edition hard drives will satisfy every user.
